In part 5, we discussed how to select the correct hosting plan. Now that you have purchased your hosting plan, it is time to put it to use. Let’s upload your website!
Things you will need:
- Email sent by your hosting provider with your FTP settings (hostname, username, password, etc.)
- An FTP Client (i.e. CuteFTP, Filezilla, etc.) or any web publishing software (i.e. MS Front Page (please make sure you have requested Front Page Exts), Macromedia Dream Weaver, Adobe Go Live, Etc.)
Once you have the above ready, open up the program you will be using to upload your files. The program will ask you for a host name (your domain name), username and password. Don’t forget, the username and password are case sensitive. If there is a field for “initial directory” use public_html. You are now ready to log in! As you log in, you will be in your home directory, you would have been told at the time of your signup where your web content is.
Once you have configured your software, you will want to set your preferences and begin transferring/managing your files. We have put together several video tutorials on how to do this for many of the popular programs listed above. You can view these tutorials here: http://nakedhosting.com/tutorials/
Learning how to upload files may seem tricky at first, however with time it will become easier.
Once you have uploaded your files, it is time to change your Domain Name Servers (DNS). In part 7, we will discuss DNS, when to change it and how to change it – along with more step by step tutorials.
For now, Happy Uploading!!!
